What happens during initial assessment?

We use the initial assessment to run through your injury history, observe your posture (if you are happy for us to) and test your range of motion. This assessment allows us to identify any areas to work on, and helps us form a treatment plan tailored specifically to you!

We will explain all before the assessment takes place to ensure you are happy and comfortable to proceed.

What are IASTM tools?

Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilisation tools are used in treatment for myofascial restriction. IASTM uses specially designed instruments to provide a mobilizing effect to scar tissue and myofascial adhesions. They can look a bit scary, but they are no more uncomfortable than massage with hands! (Occasionally they can be a little cold...!)

Does Sports Massage hurt?

Sports Massage can be uncomfortable, particularly when working with restricted and sore tissues. However, your therapist will check in throughout your treatment to ensure you aren't in too much pain. You should always feel comfortable to tell your therapist if the treatment becomes painful - we don't want to hurt you!

Are there side effects to Sports Massage?

Sports Massage does use pressure to bring bloodflow to congested areas of tissue. So it is normal to expect some bruising and soreness after a deep tissue massage. You may also feel thirsty, fatigued or light-headed. We recommend over-the-counter painkillers like ibuprofen and paracetamol if you find the massaged areas sore.

Is a Sports Massage relaxing?

Some people find Sports Massage very relaxing. However as it is generally focused on problem areas, it can at times be uncomfortable, so it is quite different to going for a spa massage.

I've just injured my back. Can I see you today?

Sports Massage Therapy is contra-indicated in the first few days following an injury. If you have just been injured, you must wait 3-7 days before a massage. This is so that the massage does not inhibit or alter your healing negatively. In the meantime, treat your injury with an ice-pack for 20 mins, and plenty of rest. If you have any neurological symptoms (tingling, burning sensations or radiating pain) seek medical advice.

Do I have to be naked?

At Restore Fitness Bournemouth, your dignity is of the upmost importance to us. We will never ask you to remove all your clothes - how many clothes you choose to wear during your treatment is at your discretion. Most treatments will be to isolated body parts (e.g. your back or legs) as we do not offer a full body massage.

During your initial assessment, you may be asked to remove some clothing, for example down to shorts/underwear. This too, is at your discretion. If you aren't comfortable to do so, please always inform your sports massage therapist.

What massage medium do you use?

We use NAQI Massage Lotion SPORT for most of our treatments. Details and full ingredients can be found here

Please let us know if you have any allergies to any of these ingredients prior to your appointment as we can find a suitable alternative with you.
